According to a local news source: “Beginning in February, police and traffic inspectors will be testing a technological program to verify the status of a car’s insurance policy and soon reporting an accident will be automated. Traffic cops will enter the license plate number into a mobile unit and the system will indicate if the car has a VALID policy something that is mandatory by law. If the car does not have a current policy it will be TOWED”.

Based on article 236-A of the Panama traffic regulations, from April 3, 2017 the ATTT, be warned that if you do not have your insurance policy in the vehicle and are involved in an accident, they will impose the fine of 100 dollars. For a routine traffic stop, failure to produce a current policy can result in a fine of 50 dollars. Both infractions may result in towing/removal of the vehicle. Please check that you have a current automobile policy in your vehicle!

Lately, I have experienced delays receiving policies from various insurance companies, but we are trying to keep on top of the problem. Please check the renewal dates and call your broker to obtain a current copy of your automobile policy.

Remember to check the “fecha de Vencimento” of your drivers license, Panama Auto Insurance is not valid while driving with an EXPIRED drivers license!
